The historic church dates from the mid-thirteenth century. It was built on the site of an older Romanesque temple that burned down in a fire. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and representative examples of Gothic architecture in Denmark.
The most valuable element of the furnishings in the richly decorated interior is a gilded altar from the first half of the 16th century. It was made by the Danish-German sculptor Claus Berg. It is 5 m high and consists of 3 parts. In the center you can see the figure of Christ surrounded by the apostles, saints of the Catholic Church and biblical figures. In total, you can see about 300 figures.
There is a crypt under the church, which is a remnant of an earlier Romanesque temple. It was restored and opened in the 19th century. You can see tombstones of Danish monarchs and 2 reliquaries of St. Canute.
