The picturesque castle stands on the island of the same name. It was built at the beginning of the 15th century, but owes its rococo character to a thorough reconstruction in the mid-18th century. Its elegant interior houses the largest private collection of paintings in Scandinavia, with over 1000 exhibits. Among them there are masterpieces of European painting from the 16th to the 18th century.
During the tour, it is worth paying attention to the restored rococo chambers in which the Danish monarch Frederick V Oldenburg lived in the 18th century.
The gardens adjacent to the castle are also open to the public. Every year, from April to May, they host Denmark's largest tulip festival. In turn, in July and August, the Lily Festival is organized here. There is also the longest avenue of Japanese cherries in the country, especially picturesque in spring.
