Vilanova i la Geltrú is a tourist town on the Costa Brava. There are many sandy beaches in the area, plus a nice Old Town and some interesting museums.
The oldest part of the city dates from the medieval times. Fragments of the city walls and several historic churches have been preserved here. The main street here is the Rambla de Vilanova, delineated in the 18th century and ending at the coast. There are shops, restaurants and bars in the historic tenement houses.
The beaches at Vilanova and la Geltrú are sandy and quite wide. At the port of Vilanova i la Geltrú is the Far de San Cristóbal Beach with designated volleyball areas. You can also relax on the beautifully situated Aiguadolç Beach in a bay.
In the 19th century, Vilanova i la Geltrú developed as a port and seaside resort. It became then many rich burgher houses. Today some of them, such as Masia d'en Cabanyes, are open to the public. One of these houses houses the Can Papiol Museum of Romanticism.
The city is known for its interesting museums. The most important is the Railway Museum of Catalonia with an open-air exhibition presenting the former rolling stock. In turn, the Museum of the Víctor Balaguer Library has one of the best in Catalonia collection of paintings and sculptures of the 19th century. The Faro de Sent Cristofol lighthouse houses Espai Far Vilanova i la Geltrú devoted to the city's relationship with the sea, and one of the newer art objects is Blue Tower - Guinovart Space.
