The national park covers the Danish Wadden Sea area with the islands of Fanø, Mandø and Rømø, as well as some backwaters and salt marshes. A large part of the park and the sea itself, also in the Netherlands and Germany, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The park is a refuge for migratory birds. Every year, 12 to 15 million birds migrating along the East Atlantic route stop in its area. There are 40 different species, such as barnacles, dandelions, seedlings and curlews. Among the nesting birds, terns and plovers can be found here. Gray and common seals also appear here.
It is worth mentioning that there are two high and low tides in 25 hours. The difference in water level then ranges from 1.5 to 2 m.
