Nyköpingshus

Local name: Nyköpingshus

Nyköpingshus is a medieval castle, now partially in ruins. The part, restored in the 20th century, houses the Sörmland Museum, with an exhibition on the past of the city of Nyköping.

The castle tower was probably built in the 11th century. The walls were built gradually, most of them were built in the 13th century on the orders of Birger the Jarl. During the reign of Gustav Vasa, the walls were strengthened for defense purposes. In the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and a century later it was consumed by a fire. Today there is a museum in the surviving tower.

There is a tragic history connected with the castle. Two brothers, princes Erik and Valdemar Magnusson, were captured here and starved to death. Birger Jarl had a fancy party on his property to which he invited his brothers. However, this was a ruse because he wanted to get rid of them as rivals in the fight for the throne. This event took place in the first half of the fourteenth century.
