From the moment of its construction, the medieval castle performed military functions related to its strategic position at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and the Strait of Gibraltar. It was built in the years 912-1035. Although there are remains of Roman structures inside, the current structure dates back to the caliphatic period. The castle is on the list of Spanish monuments.
