Santo Domingo Square is the most visited promenade in the city. Around it there are representative buildings, most of which are used by the administration. There is a Dominican monastery with the church of Santo Domingo and the chapel del Rosario. The Almodovar Palace, Arc de Santo Domingo, central bank building and Casa Cedra house are also noteworthy. On the square you can see a sculpture by José Planes commemorating Ricardo Codorníu y Stárico - a famous Spanish botanist and ecologist. There is also a human rights monument by Mariano González Beltrán.
On the site of the current square, there was a market since the 13th century, where large markets took place every Thursday. This tradition survived until the nineteenth century. The square was also used to organize city celebrations or corrida. Executions of convicts were also carried out there. In the 20th century, the space was rebuilt and organized.
