Very well-kept remains of the Roman wall surrounding the city in ancient times. The building stretches for over two thousand meters and is crowned with as many as 85 watchtowers. One of ten gates was accessible to the city. The property is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The construction of the wall in the 1st century was supervised by the engineer Vitrubio. Over the next centuries of its existence, the building underwent numerous modernizations, which, however, did not disturb its original architectural shape. The project was made primarily of granite. The defensive functions were provided by walls over four meters thick, filled with earth and stones inside. In the 19th century, a special place for artillery was added, which functions under the name of Maria Cristina's redoubt.
