The monastery was founded in the 13th century on the initiative of the King of Aragon and the Count of Barcelona, James I the Conqueror. Initially, a Muslim fortress (Castillo de Enesa) stood on the hill, after it was captured by the Spanish army, the king decided to celebrate his great victory by building a temple.
