The square is the central point of the city and a promenade popular with tourists. Around the square there are many representative buildings, mostly in Baroque style with numerous balconies, including Mercado de Sánchez Peña and Casas de Doña Ana Jacinto. There you can use the services of many cafes, restaurants and pubs. There is also a market every morning where you can buy fresh food.
The square in its present shape was created in the 17th century. Celebrations were held on the square, festivals were organized and it was the place of public gatherings. Executions were carried out there, in particular during the inquisition, and originally used for bullfighting. The space was thoroughly rebuilt and tidied up in the second half of the 20th century.
