This castle is one of the architectural monuments of the city of Slovenia in which the Maribor District Museum is currently located. This institution is rich in numerous collections and architectural exhibitions showing the city from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 18th century. The castle has many architectural achievements, such as the Loreto Chapel from the 17th century.
Interesting architectural elements of the building include the Baroque stairs, built in 1747 - 1759, and the Christmas Hall with a beautifully painted ceiling and paintings on the walls depicting the Quadri and Laurenzo Laurigio families. There is also a picture that depicts the battle between Christian and Turkish soldiers by Johann Gebler.
The castle was built during the reign of Emperor Frederick III in the second half of the 15th century to strengthen part of the city's defensive walls.
