Oponice Castle

Local name: Oponický hrad

The ruins of the castle on the ridge of the Tribeč mountain, not far from Oponice, which is located in the west of Slovakia. Only fragments of the tower, outbuildings and perimeter walls around the courtyard have survived to the present day.

The castle was built in 1300. Its owners were successively wealthy noble families, however, from the 15th century, his fame decreased and passed into the hands of poorer managers. The castle's goal was to protect Nitra against the invasions of the Turks and Tartars, through which the castle was never conquered. Due to property disputes, the castle was abandoned by its last owners. The abandoned walls became a hideout of insurgents fighting with the Habsburgs, which is why imperial forces destroyed it at the beginning of the 17th century.

An easy forest trail leads from Oponice to the castle ruins.
