Novi Sad is the capital of the Vojvodina Autonomous District. The city lies on the Danube, and its most important attraction is the Petrovaradin fortress towering over the river.
The history of Novi Sad is closely related to the history of the local fortress. The city was founded in the 17th century as a settlement for the builders of the Danube fortress. Officially, Novi Sad and Petrovaradin are two separate towns on two banks of the river, but in reality they have always functioned as one organism.
Petrovaradin Fortress was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It consists of an upper part surrounded by high walls and a lower one, reminiscent of a normal town with narrow streets and low buildings. There is a beautiful view of the Danube and Novi Sad from the other side of the river.
The Old Town in Nowy Sad has nice, classicist and eclectic buildings. Above the multi-story tenement houses, which now houses restaurants, cafes and bars, rise the church towers and church domes, including the highest neo-Gothic tower of St. Mary's Church.
In Novi Sad there is a harbor of ships sailing on the Danube and it is a stop during many days of trips on this river. Short trips around the area are also organized.
