The Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge is one of only two bridges across the Danube at the Romanian-Bulgarian border. It connects two cities - Giurgiu on the Romanian side and Ruse on the Bulgarian side. It is a road and rail bridge, there is no section for pedestrians or cyclists.
The steel bridge was built in the early 1950s according to the design of the Bulgarian architect Georgi Ovchariv. It is 2.8 km long and was the longest road and rail bridge in Europe when it was put into use. Its middle span, 85 m long, can be raised to allow the passage of large vessels along the river. The bridge has two levels - a two-lane road runs through the upper one, and a railway line through the lower one. There are rectangular towers at both ends of the bridge.
