The historic mausoleum is a memorial site dedicated to Romanian soldiers and officers who died and were lost during the First World War. There are 154 single crypts and 9 shared crypts. 5,073 soldiers were buried there. The bas-reliefs covering the walls of the monument depict battle scenes.
The mausoleum was erected on the site where the Battle of Mărăşeşti took place in the summer of 1917, fought between Romanian-Russian forces and German-Austrian troops. On the Romanian side, 480 officers and 21,000 soldiers were killed then.
The construction of the monument took 15 years. It was designed by architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu. The ceremonial inauguration took place on September 18, 1938 in the presence of the Romanian king, Charles II. On this occasion, a jubilee medal was also issued in three variants: gold, silver and bronze. On their reverse there was the Mausoleum, and on the obverse images of kings Ferdinand I and Charles II and the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Romania.
