Church of Saint Clare from Porto

Local name: Igreja de Santa Clara do Porto

Igreja Santa Clara, meaning the Church of Saint Clare is a small, extremely richly decorated temple in Porto. The interior combines Baroque and Rococo styles. The walls from the floor to the ceiling are covered with wooden decorations based mainly on plant motifs. The vault is also impressive, decorated with a thick layer of gilded elements forming geometric fields. Although the decor of the temple seems exaggerated and kitschy to some, the church is classified as a Portuguese national monument.

The Monastery of Poor Clares was founded at the beginning of the 15th century. A church was built along with it - its construction was completed in 1457. The heyday of both the temple and the order came at the beginning of the 18th century, when more and more ships from Brazil were arriving with valuable cargo to Portugal. The church Klara belonged to the order until the 19th century, when the last nun died.
