Ponte do Infante is an arch bridge that impresses with its simplicity over the River Duero. It connects Porto, and more specifically the Fontaínhas district, especially busy around the festivals of St. Jana, from Vila Nova de Gaia. It was named after Prince Henry the Sailor, born in Porto.
It is the newest bridge connecting Porto and Gaia, inaugurated in March 2003. It was built to replace the upper deck of another bridge - Ponte Dom Luís I, which was transformed into a metro route.
The bridge was designed by the architect Adão da Fonseca. It is a narrow arch, 20 meters wide and 371 meters long, with two stripes in each direction. Noteworthy is the beautiful illumination illuminating the structure both on the windowsills and under the arch. It is considered by many experts to be one of the most beautiful constructions of this type in the world.
