The botanical garden collects and promotes specimens of flora. His mission is to protect rare plant species from around the world. The vegetation is presented in a logical arrangement while maintaining high aesthetics. Visitors can admire the flower beds, stroll along the paths and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The garden also has educational functions, raises awareness of environmental issues and ecology, and preserves and breeds plant species that are threatened with extinction. Plants are also being researched, also for medicinal purposes.
The park was created in 1772 on the initiative of the Marquis of Pombal - Portuguese Prime Minister. The garden covers 13 hectares of usable floor space. The land was donated for this purpose by the Benedictine order. The park consists of two parts. The first is based on a terrace system and is designed according to 18th century trends. There are also many water reservoirs there. The second part is filled with exotic plant species.
