Żywkowo is a small village with only 9 farms and 25 inhabitants. Every year, about 100 storks come to the village to fly out of the number almost twice as large after the breeding season. The life of stork families in Żywków can be viewed from the observation tower located on farm No. 7, which belongs to the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds. Stork capital of Poland is located near the border with Russia in the province. Warmia-Mazury.
For tourists who want to see storks during hunting, an educational path has been marked out between Żywków and Toprzyn, where there are also stork nests. Along the 2 km route there are boards informing about stork feeding grounds, the threats to which these beautiful birds are exposed, as well as a description of the importance of mid-field water ponds for the protection of stork feeding grounds.
Storks' nests are located on roofs, poles, trees and specially prepared platforms. Each year, about 35 - 40 nests are occupied, while in the record years all 50. Most Polish nests, over as many as 20, have the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds on their farm.
