Bierzgłowski Castle
Local name: Zamek Bierzgłowski
The Bierzgłowski Castle is one of the oldest defensive Teutonic buildings. The Gothic castle was erected at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries in the place of an earlier borough from 1260. As a result of numerous renovations and reconstructions, the neo-Gothic style dominates in the castle today. The building belongs to the diocese of Toruń, which runs the Diocesan Culture Center here. The facility has a chapel and a conference room for 70 people, as well as guest rooms.
Until 1415, the Bierzgłowski Castle was the seat of the convent, and a very important place. However, the proximity and development of Toruń put an end to its heyday. The building was damaged many times. While conquered by Poles in 1410, the castle’s ward was burnt down. A dozen or so years later, it was partially destroyed by the order of King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk. In the sixteenth century, the castle was also haunted by numerous fires. Today, the restored monument can be visited.Less
