Cistercian abbey in Szczyrzyc is the only continuously existing Cistercian monastery in Poland. It functions as a Marian shrine and has existed for more than 700 years. Each year is the purpose of expeditions and pilgrimage of the faithful from all over the country.
The monastery complex in Szczyrk includes the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St. Stanisław Biskup, monastic buildings, abbot's house and monastery brewery.
The church was built in 1620, and in the following years it was rebuilt twice. One of the most valuable items in the church is the wonderful image of the Mother of God of Szczyrzycka.
Adjacent to the church, the monastery was consumed by a fire, after which only two portals, part of the cloister and altar mensa remained. The rest of the monastery was rebuilt after the fire. In the monastery buildings you can also see interesting monuments: a stone shrine (16th century), crucifix (XV century) or paintings of saints (17th-19th centuries).
The Abbey House now houses the Monastery Museum, which houses priceless manuscripts, monk chalices, swords and other exhibits.
