Ruins of the Kazimierz Dolny Castle

Local name: Ruiny zamku w Kazimierzu Dolnym

The ruins are remains of Kazimierz Dolny Castle. The most interesting parts of the building are the high walls with window openings - a remnant of the residential wing. Places available for sightseeing contain large courtyard, which is used today for cultural events, circumferential walls, and five-stories tower with the observation deck. The whole site is surrounded by the 8-meter dry moat which was carved in solid rock. The shop situated at the foot of the tower sells souvenirs.

The origin of the tower is not fully known. Because the tower is away from the castle and neighboring wooden buildings probably were destroyed, it is believed that it served as a guard tower. The construction is 20m tall and has 10m in diameter but what is especially worthy of attention are the massive walls which thickness amounts up to 4m. The entrance to the complex is also unusual - it is situated 6m over the ground.

The history of the castle is also interesting. It owes the existence to one of the first Piasts - Władysław I the Elbow-high. The next Polish king, Casimir the Great, built a new, limestone-brick castle in a place of a wooden fortress. Later, the castle belonged to the Goths and Firlej Family, and was destroyed by Swedens and then by the army of Prince Rakoczy. It was rebuilt in the times of Augustus II the Strong but fell into ruin shortly thereafter. The revalorization started in 2013.
