Sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

Local name: Sanktuarium w Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej

The sanctuary is an extremely popular sacral architecture complex. It is located both on the Polish List of Historic Monuments and UNESCO World Heritage List. The complex includes the main church and monastery, as well as 42 chapels and churches located on the route of so-called Path of Calvary. Every year, important church celebrations and numerous pilgrimages take placet here.

The basilica, which is the most important object of the sanctuary, was built in the 16th century and is an example of late Baroque architecture with elements of the Rococo. Matching this architectural style, interiors have been richly furnished and decorated.

The architecture of the monastery corresponds with the style of the church. The monastery is a three-storey palatial building, with five avant-corps.

In Kalwaria Zebrzydowska there are two special paths: the Lord Jesus' Path and the Mother of God's Path. The first shows the story of the crucifixion of Christ, and is comprised of 28 stations, including 24 objects. The second is comprised of 24 stations and 11 objects - they show Mary's pain due to Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.
