Water Gate

Local name: Brama Wodna

The only preserved city gate in Grudziadz is the perfect example of defense fortifications dating back to the Middle Ages. In the vicinity of the brick building there is a rocker sculpture made by the Grudziącki artist Ryszard Kaczor. Just behind him on the lawn was "City Park". This is a collection of plaques with the name of Grudziądz Street, coming from different Polish cities.

The Water Gate is a unique monument built of red brick in the fourteenth century, 200 years later partially burnt and rebuilt, making it clearly distinguish in it two styles. The elements that appeared in the construction of the building later also have two windows over the ground, carved in the wall only in the nineteenth or twentieth century. The central part of the gate is covered by an arched passage with a restored gate grille.

The name of the gateway is not accidental. This journey to the city also served the transport of drinking water to the castle, which was drawn from the nearby river Osa. The medieval building in the past was the whole, together with the city walls, defending access to the castle.
