City walls

Local name: Mury obronne

Preserved fragments of the medieval city walls can be seen today between the outlets of ul. Monastery and School. This is the best preserved fragment, but not the only, as the remains of the corner tower are also located next to the evangelical church, and the relics of the walls in the vicinity of the former Benedictine monastery and the walls of townhouses at ul. Marble and in several other places. The Water Gate was the only survivor of the medieval defense complex.

City fortifications were built just after the site of Grudziądz in 1291, surrounded by a wall and moat wall. New buildings were combined with fortifications of the former Teutonic Castle. Another extension and expansion made the city surrounded by a double wall wreath with four towers - Toruńska, Lasińska, Wodna and Boczna. The fifth gate - Castle - merged both strings of walls into one. Until the present time there are only traces left behind the gates, because the structures were demolished in the 19th century. Within the walls there were also 10 towers, one of which was octagonal.
