The seventeenth-century fortress was built on the orders of the king of Denmark and Norway Christian V. It was built as part of the reconstruction of the city after a great fire in 1681. It was designed by the engineer and urban planner Johan Caspar von Cicignon. The object was entered in the register of Norwegian monuments.
