The history of the city is not long because it has existed only since the beginning of the 20th century. Previously, a small settlement functioned there. Only the commencement of exploitation of the iron ore deposits in Kiruna, Sweden, made the construction of the port necessary. The advantage of Narvik was the fact that thanks to the warm sea current, the local coastal waters never freeze.
The most important event in the history of the city was the Battle of Narvik, fought in May 1940. On the side of the Allies, the Polish Brigade of Podhale Rifles took part in it, which contributed to the fighting and is still commemorated in the city today. The most important memorial related to the Battle of Narvik is the War Museum. In the cemeteries in the area, you can visit the graves of Polish soldiers.
Most of Narvik's attractions are related to the possibilities of active tourism. In winter, the Narvikfjellet Ski Resort is open here. In turn, in summer, hiking and biking tours in the area are popular, as well as kayaking in the fjords or fishing trips. A popular excursion destination is the Narvikfjellet viewing platform, from which you can admire the breathtaking panorama of the city, the surrounding mountains and fjords. It can be reached on foot or by gondola.
