Sailors Mosque
Local name: Mornarska džamija
Sailors' Mosque is a Muslim temple erected in the fourteenth century by the Moors. It is an important monument in Ulcinj, formerly serving as a lighthouse. In 1798 a small cultural center was established here, also serving as a religious school and shelter for travelers and the poor.
The mosque was built so that merchants could pray trading on this part of the Adriatic coast. Interestingly, it was built before the establishment of Islam in Ulcinj. Ibrahim-pasa Bušatlija of Skadar, who rebuilt the mosque in thanks for surviving the battle of Krussi, contributed to the development of this place. He dedicated the building to sailors from Ulcinj, who contributed to the success of his family, hence the name - Mosque of Sailors.
After World War I, Montenegro became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. As a result, in 1931 the army destroyed the mosque. After 81 years, however, it was rebuilt by private investors from Alanya in Turkey. The Muslim Association of Montenegro and the municipality of Ulcinj are also involved in the investment.
