The mound is considered to be the entrance to the Nemunas Loop Regional Park. Archaeological research has shown that the area was already inhabited in the Stone Age, while the mound itself dates from the 14th - 15th centuries. On its top there was once a wooden Punios castle. At the foot of the hill you can see a stone erected in honor of the legendary prince of Samogitia, Margiris.
