Located in the south of Latvia, Liepaja is its second largest port and a popular holiday destination. There are sandy beaches here, and the city has a reputation of a cultural center due to the festivals taking place here.
Liepaja has existed since the Middle Ages, but it gained significant importance only in the 16th century. A port operated here, and the city developed thanks to maritime trade. Buildings were erected that can be admired to this day, including the sixteenth-century church of St. Anne with baroque interior and the Lutheran church of the Holy Trinity from the 17th century
The center of Liepaja is decorated with market halls built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, where fish, vegetables, dairy products and other food products can be bought to this day. The center also has many restaurants offering traditional Latvian cuisine.
In the summer Liepaja is populated by tourists who come here to sandy beaches, which are suitable for both resting and walking, running and spending time actively.
One of the most important Latvian rock festivals, Liepājas dzintars takes place in the city. The country's oldest symphony orchestra also operates here, and the modern Amber Entertainment Hall hosts numerous cultural events.
