The main entrance to the ancient city of Petra is in the form of a narrow ravine 1.2 km long. Its walls measure from 91 to 182 m in height. As you walk along the gorge, you can see underground chambers. Their function is not fully explained, most likely they served as a shelter for guards defending the entrance to the city.
