Piccolomini Palace

Local name: Palazzo Piccolomini

Palace built in the second half of the 15th century by master Leon Battista Alberti as the summer residence of Pope Pius II. It is one of the earliest examples of a Renaissance palace.

The building was built on a square plan with an inner courtyard surrounded by arcades. The walls are decorated with bas-reliefs and frescoes. On the first floor there are the former papal apartments, with a bedroom, private rooms, a gallery and the Hall of Ancestors. Their walls and vaults are decorated with Renaissance paintings.
