The abbey is one of the most significant examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture. According to legend, it was founded at the end of the 12th century by Count Lecce. The excavations carried out here have revealed many interesting monuments, including tombs and a mill. Also noteworthy are the abbey door decorated with scenes from the New Testament and 13th-century frescoes in the interior.
