Cuneo is a town situated at the foot of the Alps and is a good base for mountain excursions. The area is also eagerly chosen by fans of off-road cycling.
The city has existed since the Middle Ages and its historical part has retained its layout from that period. There are several nice churches here, as well as old tenement houses and city palaces. An important monument is Villa Oldofredi Tadini from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, built as an observation tower. Today it houses a museum dedicated to its owners and their collections of arts and crafts. There is also a municipal museum in Cuneo and a railway museum.
The city's main square is Piazza Tencredi Galimerti, surrounded by neoclassical buildings. In its central part there is a monument to Giuseppe Barbaroux, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes around.
The local culinary traditions are an important attraction of Cuneo. The area is known for its cheese-making, and a cheese festival is held here every November. Another flagship of Cuneo's products is rum-filled chocolates, which can be purchased at many of the mall's shops.
