The basilica was dedicated to St. Margaret, patroness of the city of Cortona. The construction was completed in 1304, and in the 14th century it was decorated with a series of frescoes. The present church is the result of a reconstruction from the 19th century. Tourists can admire numerous works of art, including the marble tomb of St. Margaret and a crucifix from 1602.
