Alghero is one of the few Italian towns where the city walls are approximately 70% preserved. They surround the old town and are fortified by four bastions - Christopher Columbus, Antonio Pigafett, Ferdinand Magellan and Magdalena. There are also several watchtowers and observation towers that have survived to this day.
