The Armenian monastery complex erected before 1000 became famous during the Napoleonic Wars, when the monks created a hospital for French soldiers. Emperor Bonaparte personally visited the sick, which was immortalized by Antoine-Jean Gros in the picture "Napoleon visits the contemplated in Jaffa."
