Wicklow Gaol is a former prison, now converted into a museum and open to the public. During the interactive tour, visitors learn about the stories of the inmates and the prison itself. Actors and staff play the roles of prison guards and inmates. Here you can see such exhibits as a life-size treadmill, on which prisoners had to spend many hours as a punishment. The dungeons are also open to the public.
The prison was built in 1702. In the following decades, it was rebuilt and extended twice. The last prisoners left it in 1924, then the building fell into disrepair more and more. In the mid-nineties it was renovated and reopened as a museum.
It is said that due to the many suffering prisoners endured within its walls, Wicklow Gaol has become one of the most haunted buildings in the world. For this reason, it appeared in a 2009 episode of Ghost Hunters International.
