Swords Castle

Local name: Caisleán Shoird

A 13th-century castle located in the town of Swords, several kilometers north of Dublin. In 2010, it served as a film set for the filming of the series "Tudor Dynasty". The castle stands out from other Irish castles with a larger circumference of the walls. It is 305 m high.

It was built for the first Archbishop of Dublin, John Comyn. It served as the main residence of subsequent bishops until 1324. Over the next centuries, the castle was inhabited by several Irish families, occupied by Dutch Protestants, and during the rebellion in 1641, it was the meeting place of the Irish Catholic nobility, who were in favor of taking over the English administration in Ireland. They were driven out of the castle by Sir Coote. About 200 people died during the attack. There is little information about the history of the castle after these events. In 1985, it was purchased by the Fingal County Council, which continues restoration work to restore the walls to their former glory.
