The Rogerstown Estuary is a funnel-like, nano-sized estuary of the Ballyboghil River into the sea. It is located north of Dublin between the villages of Rush and Portrane. This area is one of the best waterfowl observation sites in Ireland.
The estuary covers an area of approximately 4 square kilometers. They are covered with sands and silts carried by the river. Due to the proximity of the coast, many of them are saline. They are covered with meadows and low thickets. River canals wind between them, and artificial dykes can be seen in several places. A 19th century railway bridge runs through the estuary.
The mouth of the Ballyboghil River is a well-known nesting and migratory site among ornithologists. Especially many species can be observed here in spring and autumn, when flocks heading to or from the north begin to migrate.
