The Donkey Sanctuary is a shelter for donkeys and mules. Established in 1987 and affiliated with The Donkey Sanctuary UK, which has operated in Devon since 1969. The initiator was the late Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen - British spokeswoman for animal rights. In 2011, The Donkey Sanctuary Ireland was registered as a charity.
The shelter takes care of animals that have been rescued from breeding or abandoned by their owners. They stay on farms run by the organization, as well as in private homes as part of the adoption program. Animals also work with children as part of onotherapy. The organization fights to improve the living and working conditions of animals, including by conducting research on methods of transporting donkeys and mules across Europe, giving advice on breeding and feeding them, and offering free treatment. The work of the organization is international.
