The Kinsale Museum is housed in a historic 16th-century building in the city center. It is a regional museum dedicated to showing the past and culture of Kinsale and its surroundings. There are exhibitions devoted to the siege of the city at the beginning of the 17th century, the Lusitania disaster in 1915 and the relationship with the sea.
The museum was founded thanks to the efforts of the famous historian and politician Sinn Fein Seamas Breathnach. It contains documents, maps, everyday items, equipment for craft workshops and the port of Kinsale.
Located on the narrow and long bay, Kinsale has been associated with the sea from its beginnings. Hence, the main exhibition is devoted to maritime traditions. Here you can see the equipment of ships, the port, old anchors and navigation devices, as well as flags and ship flags. Part of the exhibition is devoted to two important maritime events related to Kinsale. The first is the siege of the city and a sea battle between the Spanish and English fleets in the 17th century, and the second is the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. It was in Kinsale that the news of the crash was announced. The exhibition includes documents relating to both events and related monuments.
