Powerscourt Estate
Local name: Eastát Chúirt an Phaoraigh
Powerscourt House is a large country estate surrounded by a large park. The house, originally a 13th century castle, was completely rebuilt in the 18th century by the German architect Richard Cassel. On the property there are, among others golf course, restaurant and hotel. The residence also houses the Tara's Palace Museum of Childhood. This is a museum that houses dollhouses, miniatures, dolls, historical toys and Tara's Palace, one of the largest dollhouses in the world.
Powerscourt House is surrounded by gardens and a park. There are, among others The Italian Garden and the Japanese Garden, both over a hundred years old. One of the more interesting parts of the Powerscourt gardens is the Animal Cemetery, which is the resting place of the beloved animals of the Wingfield and Slazenger families. It is located in a quiet part of the garden with azaleas, rhododendrons and roses. It is possibly the largest pet cemetery in Ireland.
