Clara Bog

Local name: Dúlra Phortach Chlóirthigh

Clara Bog Nature Reserve is one of the best preserved raised bogs in Western Europe. The area of almost 10 square kilometers is covered with swamps, ponds and wet meadows. An educational trail has been marked out here, leading along special bridges. There is also an educational center next to the reserve.

The bog began to form in a basin during the Ice Age. Since then, it has been systematically growing, creating ever deeper layers of peat. The whole area is wet and swampy. It is also home to many species of amphibians, reptiles and insects.

Clara Bog bog is one of the most important natural sites in Ireland. Its area is protected. You are allowed to walk only along the designated educational trail, which runs along special wooden platforms. The educational center allows you to get acquainted with the process of peat bog formation, as well as the plants and animals that exist on it.
