Doe Castle is beautifully situated on a promontory over Sheephaven Bay in County Donegal. It is washed on three sides by water. Above it, on a rocky cliff, there is a residential tower surrounded by walls. Currently, the castle area is open to visitors.
The castle was probably built in the 16th century. Scientists believe a smaller fortress may have existed here before.
For about 200 years it belonged to the Sweeney family from Scotland. During its history, the castle changed owners many times. It is considered one of the best fortified on the northwest coast. It survived several sieges.
Today, the castle is primarily a picturesque building rising above the sea coast. The castle grounds can be visited daily, while the interior is only available during guided tours on weekends.
