Dunbrody Abbey

Local name: Mainistir Dhún Bróithe

Dunbrody Abbey is the ruins of a 13th century Cistercian monastery located in the village of Campile, Co. Wexford. It is a stone structure on a cross plan, with a square tower at the intersection of the naves. In addition to the remains of the church, there are also the remains of residential and farm buildings.

The monastery was founded around 1170 after the Norman invasion. The buildings that have survived to this day, however, mostly date back to the 13th century. The square tower, which was added to the church in the 15th century, is later. The monastery operated until the Reformation, when it was dissolved. Its grounds were in the hands of one of the wealthy families of Wexford County. In the 19th century, part of the church collapsed.

Currently, the facility is made available to tourists. Here you can see well-preserved ruins of the church, with a presbytery decorated with tall, narrow windows. Next to the church, there are remains of residential and farm buildings.
