Sauðárkrókur is a small port town lying on the fjord of the same name. In the center, there are some 19th-century buildings, including a church. From here you can go on a cruise to watch whales, and watch the birds living on the coast.
The town is picturesquely situated on the seashore. In the past, its inhabitants, apart from fishing, were engaged in tanning. Today, in Sauðárkrókur, you can visit the Museum of Tannery, in which the appearance of the former factory has been recreated, and the Tanner's House.
The surroundings of Sauðárkrókur are very picturesque and have lots of landscape attractions. Among them is a black beach covered with volcanic sand and gravel. The Reykjafoss Waterfall descending into a volcanic chasm makes a great impression. The town and the nearest areas are also known for the eradication of volcanic and geothermal phenomena. In the city itself, you can visit the Sauðárkrókur thermal pools, and outside the built-up area, there are natural Grettislaug Baths.
