Hvammstangi is a port town and a large mollusc fishing center. Boats for seal-watching cruises also depart from the local marina. The Icelandic Seal Center is located in the village, and there are wonderful waterfalls and canyons in the area.
The town is situated on the shore of the fjord and has a harbor protected from the winds. For this reason, a thriving commercial center developed here as early as the 19th century. You can learn about its history in the local Trade Museum.
Currently, the biggest attraction of Hvammstanga is the opportunity to go on a cruise during which you can watch seals. Their colonies are very numerous in this area. During the trip, you can watch the animals basking on the shore as well as swimming in the sea.
A short distance from Hvammstangi there are very interesting landscapes, the Kolugljúfur Canyon and the Kolufossar Waterfall. The river Víðiðalsá has carved a very picturesque ravine here, in which it flows in cascades towards the sea. While exploring the Hvammstangi area, you can also see the Skardsviti lighthouse.
