Húsavík is the most important city on the northern coast of Iceland. Is also the main whale watching center on the island, and tourist attractions are primarily cruises in search of these marine mammals.
The city is one of the oldest habitats in the northern part of the island. You can see here a wooden church from 1907, considered the most beautiful in Iceland. The buildings are made of low, wooden and brick houses, a large part of which is painted in bright colors.
Húsavík is one of the main fishing and fish processing centers in Iceland, and has been developing as a tourist center since 1998. This was due to the opening of the Whale Information Center. At the port there is an information pavilion with exhibitions dedicated to these mammals. Tourists can also take advantage of guided boat trips to the "sea safari" around Skjálfandi Bay.
As the main city of the northern part of the island and the Húsavíkma region also an interesting museum showing the history and culture of the surrounding area. It collects marine exhibits related to fisheries and everyday life of residents, as well as nature collections on the fauna and flora of Iceland.
In recent years, the city has also developed as a winter sports center. You can go skiing, snowmobiles, go fishing in deep-water, and admire the northern lights.
