AKUREYRI tourist attractions

+15 attractions

Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland and the most important center in the north of the island. It lies on the Eyjafjörður fjord, near hot springs, and in winter its surroundings are a great place to observe the northern lights.

Tourists coming to Akureyri treat them primarily as a starting point for the natural attractions of northern Iceland. Already from the city you can see bare, granite mountains rising up to 1500 m above sea level. In the area there are also natural thermal baths Mývatn which are the destination of popular trips.

Due to its location by the sea, the city is also a place from which whale watching trips begin. In the area you can also go on a fjord cruise combined with observation of Arctic sea birds living here, including puffins.

A major attraction of the village is the renovated housing estate of nineteenth-century houses with peat roofs covered in grass. Idyllic-looking cottages with white facades and red window borders stand against the backdrop of mountain slopes falling towards the sea.

In winter Akurayri offers tourists attractions in the form of the possibility of watching the northern lights, snowmobile tours and ski and snowshoe tours.
